SolarEdge

SolarEdge works, with two caveats worth knowing before you start: getting an API key is harder than it used to be, and the data is fifteen minutes old.

Tested against a simulator

Exercised against a simulator of SolarEdge's site API, including the flow directions. No real site key yet.

Getting an API key

SolarEdge removed self-service key generation in 2025. If your monitoring account still shows an API Access section, you can make your own. Most owners no longer can, and have to ask whoever installed the system.

  1. Sign in to the SolarEdge monitoring portal
  2. Admin → Site Access → API Access
  3. If that section is missing, ask your installer for a site API key
  4. Your site ID is the number in the monitoring portal's URL

Some owners have had luck asking SolarEdge support directly, quoting the inverter serial. Results vary by region.

Connecting

  1. Settings → Equipment → SolarEdge
  2. Paste the site ID and the API key
  3. Check it works — Sunplug reads your site once and shows the numbers
  4. Save

Fifteen minutes, and why

SolarEdge inverters upload every fifteen minutes, and the API allows 300 calls per site per day. Sunplug polls within that budget, which means it follows a steady afternoon reasonably and cannot follow fast-moving cloud at all.

There is no local option in Sunplug today. If your inverter has Modbus TCP enabled it would be much better, and it is on the list.

You may need a meter

Consumption monitoring needs a meter fitted at your supply point. Plenty of SolarEdge installs have production monitoring only. Without it Sunplug can see generation but not surplus — add a Shelly meter and it works out the rest.

When it does not work

"SolarEdge rejected the API key"

Check the site ID as well as the key — a key is only valid for the site it was issued for, and pasting one with the other site's ID fails the same way.

"Daily request limit reached"

Something else is using the same key — a Home Assistant integration or another app sharing the 300-call budget. Ask your installer for a second key.

Consumption is missing

No meter at the supply point. See above.

Worth knowing: SolarEdge has signalled that this API version will be retired and replaced. If that happens, Sunplug will follow — you will not need to do anything.
